Pityriasis Alba

Pityriasis is a group of skin disorders in which a scaly rash is usually present. Pityriasis Alba is a skin infection usually affects children and young adults and is characterized by hypopigmented, round to oval, scaling patches on the face, upper arms, neck, or shoulders. The disease occurs more apparent in summer. Pityriasis alba is a common skin disorder similar to very mild eczema. This condition is not dangerous or contagious.

Pityriasis Alba Causes

The exact causes of pityriasis alba is yet not known properly but this skin infection will clear up after a few months, or in some cases persist two or three years. Excessively dry skin and exposure to direct sunlight some are contributory factors.

Symptoms of Pityriasis Alba

• Slightly elevated patches of fine scales over the cheeks, scaling patches on the face, upper arms, neck
• itching
• Lesions don't tan during the summer
• May redden quickly in the sun

Pityriasis Alba Treatment

This disorder is treated with Application of a lubricant and Topical 1% hydrocortisone to relieve itching. Pimecrolimus cream is also effective in the treatment. The prognosis is good and there is usually spontaneous healing within several months to a few years.
